Under the Supreme Royal Order, the Moroccan Government is implementing a major aid and support program for communities affected by extreme weather, estimated to be worth MAD 3 billion.

Following the extremely severe weather conditions that have affected the country over the past two months, particularly in the Gharb and Loukkos plains, His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist him, who constantly shows concern for his people and strives to ensure their safety and improve their living conditions, has issued Supreme Royal Instructions to the government to implement a major aid and support program for families and residents affected, as well as to take the necessary regulatory measures in such circumstances.

In this regard, the Head of Government issued a decree declaring the extreme weather a disaster and designating the most severely affected communes in four provinces (Larache, Kénitra, Sidi Kacem and Sidi Slimane) as disaster areas, according to a press release from the Office of the Head of Government.

According to the same source, the government has established an aid and support program with an estimated allocation of three billion dirhams, based on a careful and thorough assessment of the situation on the ground and an accurate evaluation of the economic and social impact of the extreme weather.

The program focuses on the following:

  • Assistance for resettlement, loss of income, rehabilitation of affected homes and small businesses, and reconstruction of collapsed houses, totaling MAD 775 million.
  • In-kind assistance and the strengthening of emergency field operations to meet the population’s essential and urgent needs, amounting to MAD 225 million.
  • Support for farmers and livestock breeders amounting to MAD 300 million.
  • Investment in the rehabilitation of roads and hydro-agricultural infrastructure, as well as the restoration of basic networks, amounting to MAD 1.7 billion.

His Majesty the King has also instructed the government to ensure that the program is implemented in an exemplary, swift, and responsible manner, enabling residents in the affected areas to return to normal life as soon as possible, the press release added.

The exceptional weather conditions experienced by the country have caused floods covering more than 110,000 hectares and forced nearly 188,000 people to relocate in the provinces of Larache, Kénitra, Sidi Kacem and Sidi Slimane.
