KOTA KINABALU: The Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Kota Kinabalu has refuted recent social media claims alleging that “the Chinese Embassy in Malaysia had issued a strong warning to the Sabah Government over the water supply issue.”

In a statement today, the Consulate General described the allegation as “disinformation and entirely baseless.”

“Neither the Embassy of China in Malaysia nor the Consulate General of China in Kota Kinabalu has ever issued any so-called warning or threat to the Sabah State Government, Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK), or any other local authority regarding the water supply issue. We have also never made any so-called travel advisory as claimed,” said the statement.

The Consulate General reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the spirit of China–Malaysia friendship and mutually beneficial cooperation, as well as to further strengthening practical partnerships between China and Sabah in areas such as tourism, trade, and culture.

“We will continue to promote people-to-people exchanges and enhance local cooperation between the two countries,” the statement added.

The Consulate General also urged media organisations to report based on verified facts and to refrain from circulating unsubstantiated claims that could mislead the public or damage the friendly relations between China and Malaysia.
